On the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association, LACEA, Professor Nora Lustig received the title of President Emerita in recognition of her role in the creation of LACEA, and her strong leadership and continuous unwavering support. The award ceremony took place on November 10, 2017 in Lustig’s native city of Buenos Aires.

Professor Lustig played a pivotal role in garnering support for the creation of LACEA and its establishment as the leading association of economists interested in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1991, she led the Organizing Committee who envisioned such an association. In 1993, Albert Fishlow became the first President of LACEA and Nora Lustig its first Vice-President.

Under Professor Lustig’s presidency (1998-99), LACEA launched Economia, an academic journal which has become the outlet of choice for some of the best economic research on Latin America. LACEA was also awarded a major grant by the World Bank which gave support to the annual meetings, the journal, and the first two LACEA-sponsored research networks on Inequality and Poverty and Political Economy.

Over the years, Professor Lustig continued to play influential roles in LACEA, most importantly, as advisor to the Presidents and the Executive Committee, and as a “goodwill” ambassador of the association before international organizations and academic institutions.

Professor Lustig concluded her reception speech by encouraging the audience, particularly women economists, to “Never take ‘No’ for an answer and dream on.”
