Short bio


Nora Lustig joined Tulane University in August 2009 as Samuel Z. Stone Professor of Latin American Economics in the Department of Economics and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Lustig obtained her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1979. Prior to joining Tulane Dr. Lustig was Shapiro Visiting Professor of International Affairs at George Washington University; Director of the Poverty Group at UNDP; President and Professor of the Department of Economics of the Universidad de las Americas, Puebla, Mexico; Senior Advisor and Chief of the Poverty and Inequality Unit at the Inter-American Development Bank; Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Studies Program of the Brookings Institution; and, Professor at the Center of Economic Studies of the Colegio de Mexico.


Dr. Lustig's research and teaching have focused on economic development, poverty and inequality, social policies and social protection with particular emphasis on Latin America. She has published fifteen books and more than seventy articles. Her classic Mexico: the Remaking of an Economy (Brookings Institution) was selected by Choice magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book. She was a founding member and president of LACEA, the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association and co-director of the 2000/1 World Development Report Attacking Poverty. Currently Dr. Lustig serves on the advisory boards of the Center for Global Development, the Earth Institute, the Instituto Carso de la Salud (Mexico) and the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation and is a member of eight editorial boards including the Journal of Economic Inequality, Feminist Economics, and the Latin American Research Review.


She is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences since 1987. She is a Visiting Fellow of the Center for Global Development since 2008. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Lustig has spent her adult life in Mexico and the United States.
